Hawthorne students visited Keokuk Waterworks for Engineering Is Elementary course

Fourth and fifth grade math students from Hawthorne Elementary went on a research field trip to the Keokuk Waterworks Treatment Plant that was led by General Manager Dave Bogner, Plant Superintendent Jim Maddox, and Assistant Superintendent Bill Seabold. Students learned how the Mississippi River water is filtered and treated to make drinkable water. They will then use this information as they design, build and test their own water filters in class. The field trip was part of an Engineering Is Elementary course that was funded by a Governor’s STEM Advisory Council Scale-Up Award. It utilizes the Engineering Design Process, meets Next Generation Science Standards, and puts Science and Engineering Practices to work.

“They are excited to get started on their work,” Diane Berner, Hawthorne teacher, said. “We really appreciate the time and expertise shared with us.”
