KCSD to host Veterans Day Assembly

The Keokuk Community School District is hosting a Veterans Day Assembly on Nov. 8 in honor of those who have served in the military at the Keokuk High School. The event will be held at 9:30 a.m. and is open to the community. Students in grades three through twelve will also attend.

This is just a small way to show our [KCSD] enormous support and love for our Veterans who stand on that ‘wall’ everyday of their service to defend our freedoms and our people from the enemies of democracy,” Kurt Barnes, event co-organizer and KMS social studies teacher, said.

Veterans are specifically invited to attend and transportation will be provided by KCSD for veterans from Mississippi Terrace, River Terrace and Keokuk Senior Lofts. Loading will start at 8:30 a.m. and riders will be returned at about 10:30 a.m. Transportation is handicap accessible, and there will be help for veterans who need it to get in and out of the vehicle. Also, veterans are welcome to come ahead at 8:30 a.m. for coffee and donuts.

The event will feature musical entertainment from students, including the singing of the National Anthem by Carter Killoren and Olivia Claus, a performance by KHS Choral Ensemble, eighth grade choir and KHS Trumpet Trio, guest speakers, a POW White Table and Flag Folding Ceremony, and more.

Veterans who are also KHS graduates are encouraged to email a photo and provide your graduation year, your branch/rank/title and a service picture if possible to Anna.WestermeyerMarl@keokukschools.org. The photo and information will be used in a slideshow for the assembly and then it will be posted on Facebook. Those who submit info do not have to attend, but are encouraged to join us.
