The Keokuk High School boys 4×100 meter relay team broke a 31 year old school record this season and qualified for the Drake Relays where they also beat that same 1994 team’s time at Drake.
Both the current relay team and the 1994 team ran in Heat 3 at Drake, just 31 years apart. The current team’s school record is 43.49 seconds and they ran 43.67 seconds at Drake and placed 30th out of 99 relay teams and were 1.58 seconds behind the first place finisher. This beat the 1994 team’s school record of 43.8 seconds, but the 1994’s team time at Drake was 45.25 seconds and they placed fourth in their heat, their time was exactly one second slower than the first place finisher.
The relay team this year included runners Tramell Smith, Kurt Joy, Ryan Bair and Drew Campbell and the 1994 team included Dustin Johnson, Larry Roberts, Mark Woodring and Denico Billingsley.
Both of the boys and girls 4×100 meter relay teams qualified for the coveted Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, and ran on April 26. The girls team had a handoff miss at Drake and ran 53.93 seconds, but their best time of the season so far is 50.65 seconds. The current school record for the girls’ 4×100 relay is 49.58 seconds from 2018.
The next meet is the return of the Keokuk Relays for the first time since 2022 on April 29 in Calvert Stadium.
