KHS students presented and competed in Keokuk Science Fair

Keokuk High School students showcased their science research projects to the public and judges in the KMS library on Feb. 19.

The Physical Science Placings are Kelly Takorbisong with first place for her project titled, “Comparative Chemical Analysis of Plant-Based vs. Animal-Based Biodiesel: Impacts on Engine Performance and Emissions,” team Ellie Brewer and Alayna King with second place, and Carl Hausch with third place. The Biological Science Placings are Keira Campbell with first place for her project titled, “XenoKnees: A Novel Approach to Utilizing Male Bovine Patellar Tendons in Human Ligament Reconstructions,” Christine Condren with second place and Cally Leenerts with third place.

The Best Board Awards went to Kelly Takorbisong and Keira Campbell. The Photography Award went to Natalee Alberts, Kelly Takorbisong and Destiny Tedrow. The Most Original Award went to Natalee Alberts and Keira Campbell. The Lee County Soil and Water Conservation Award went to Keira Campbell, Carl Hausch, Landon Mondon, Kelly Takorbisong and Destiny Tedrow. The Inspiring Excellence Award went to team Ellie Brewer and Alayna King, and individuals Keira Campbell, Christine Condren, Cally Leenerts and Kelly Takorbisong.

The full list of KHS students that participated in the KHS Science Fair are Carl Hausch, Landon Mondon, Cayden, Christine Condren, Alayna King, Kelly Takorbisong, Natalee Alberts, Keira Campbell, Destiny Tedrow, Cally Leenerts, Ellie Brewer and Carrigan Morris. The senior awards went to Natalee Alberts, Keira Campbell and Kelly Takorbisong, all three with six years of participation, and senior Destiny Tedrow with two years of participation.

This was the first fair that students participated in of the competitive science fair season.

The KMS and KHS students will also participate in these additional science competitions, including:

  • Culver-Stockton Science Fair (KMS and KHS) on Feb. 22 in Canton, Missouri
  • SE Iowa Fair (KMS and KHS) on Mar. 6, in Burlington, Iowa
  • Eastern (Regional) (KMS and KHS) on Mar. 15 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa
  • State (KMS and KHS) on March 26-28 in Ames, Iowa
