KMS students partner with Keokuk Walldogs on city art project

Keokuk Middle School students have once again collaborated with the Keokuk Walldogs as part of the City of Keokuk’s ongoing riverfront revitalization project.

“This experience offers students meaningful, hands-on engagement with public art, fosters teamwork, and builds confidence in their artistic abilities,” Jim Short, KMS principal, said. “It also deepens their connection to the community by allowing them to contribute to a public space that residents and visitors will enjoy for years to come.”

The Walldogs funded the project and provided all of the necessary materials and Miss Luft, the KMS art teacher, donated her time after school to supervise and guide the students, who devoted two days a week for a month to the initiative.

For the community, the project is meant to enhance the visual appeal of the riverfront while showcasing the creativity, dedication and civic involvement of our local youth, strengthening community pride and support for public art initiatives, according to KMS and the Walldogs. The city’s riverfront revitalization project also includes a new walking path and several additional murals that are being developed.

“We extend our sincere appreciation to the KMS student volunteers and to Miss Luft for their commitment to bringing our community together through art and helping make Keokuk a better place,” Mr. Short added. “You embody everything we value at KMS.”

Previously, KMS students have partnered with the Keokuk Walldogs over the years and have contributed to a wide range of art projects throughout the community.
