The History Club has been created at Keokuk High School and the first initiative for the newly founded group is to host a travel study for eight days to Italy and Greece in the summer of 2026 with advisor Brandon Ramirez, a KHS teacher.
“We want to create diverse and exciting learning opportunities for our kids,” Brandon Ramirez, KHS teacher, said. “Being a part of this group is something that students can take pride in, share memories, and learn so much about our own society, as well as those cultures that helped shape us.”
The initial interest meeting for the European adventure planned for about June 9, 2026, was held for students and parents on Nov. 21 with about 50 families wanting more information. The goal is to have a minimum of 24 students signed up with four chaperones. Students need to confirm enrollment in the trip by Nov. 29, 2024.
Ramirez said he created the new club to help students experience travel, various cultures and history in person. On this excursion, students will travel to Italy and see Rome, Pompeii, and more and then travel to Greece and explore Athens and Delphi. The club has partnered with EF Educational Tours for this excursion and students are “excited to be a part of this once in a lifetime experience,” Ramirez said. EF will provide a tour director that will be with the group for the entire trip and the itinerary will include the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Capitoline Hill, St. Peter’s Square and Basilica and a food-themed walking tour in Rome. In and around Athens, Greece, students will explore the Parthenon, Temple of Athena Nike, Olympic Stadium, Syntagma Square, Delphi, Acropolis and a walking tour of Athens with a Greek dance lesson.
Payment options are available and fundraising opportunities and donations will be a vital part of the success for students to be able to participate and there are ways to do so through EF Educational Tours and the History Club at KHS.
