Keokuk Community School District offers the only school-sponsored three-hour Monday through Friday three and four-year-old preschool in Lee County each morning with an additional afternoon option for four-year-old preschool.
“Our preschool provides an atmosphere where students learn expectations socially, emotionally and academically,” Meghan Davis, Torrence principal, said. “It is a safe place to learn these expectations to help ease the transition to kindergarten.”
The preschool staff will host a Preschool Roundup at Torrence, 1721 Fulton Street, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12. Parents can drop in and find out more about the staff, teaching strategies and curriculum, family involvement, intake forms, as well as take a tour of classrooms and begin the enrollment process.
The four-year-old half day preschool is free for the AM or PM session and the three-year-old preschool is tuition-based again in Fall 2025. The district’s afternoon free half day option is held Monday through Friday, except on Wednesdays.
The Class Time Offerings are:
- AM Classes for three and four year olds, 8-11 a.m., Mondays through Fridays, five days a week
- PM Classes for four year olds, noon-3 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays
At Torrence, there is one certified teacher and two associates per classroom who teach creative curriculums, Second Step and Sunshine Circles Social Emotional Lessons, handwriting and fine motor instruction, standard-based math activities, Michael Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons. Torrence Preschool uses the Teaching Strategies GOLD Assessment throughout the year to track each child’s learning and growth through multiple domains by using observation and planned activities to perform checkpoints in fall, winter and spring.
Torrence encourages family involvement in each child’s education and features open houses, literacy nights, a winter concert, class parties, field trips, valentine box making night and more.
Parents need to bring the following to the roundup or to enroll their child:
– Birth Certificate
– Proof of Residency
– Immunization Records
– Most recent physical
The free four-year-old preschool is for children that will be four by Sept. 15, 2025, and is part of the Iowa’s Statewide Voluntary Preschool Program (SWVPP) for Four-Year-Old Children. SWVPP was created to provide an opportunity for all children in Iowa to enter school in kindergarten ready to learn by expanding quality preschool.
