The Keokuk Middle School MathCounts team qualified for the state competition by placing second at the Ottumwa Competition on Feb. 14.
The KMS team that qualified included Sam Higbie, Jackson Bair, Bryar Hayner and Blaze Barnes. Also, Sam Higbie placed sixth in the individual competition.
Fourteen total seventh and eighth grade KMS students competed at the MathCounts Chapter Competition in Ottumwa, including Sam Higbie, Bryar Hayner, Carter Nye, Jackson Bair, Olivia Cochenour, Blaze Barnes, Blessing Takorbisong, Ezza Matlick, JJ Stevens, John Morris, Lilly Rodes, Londyn Olsen, Peyson Reed and Tuff Leggett.
The MathCounts Competition Series has four levels of competition, starting at the school level, then the chapter level, next is at the state level and then at the national level. Each level of competition consists of four rounds, sprint, target, team and countdown, which will take about three hours to complete, according to MathCounts.
The state competition will be held on March 28 in Des Moines, Iowa.
