This Spring 16 Keokuk High School students will have earned referee certificates in four different sports as part of the Iowa High School Athletic Association RefReps program provided by the NFHS.
“The program gives our students the chance to earn officiating certifications, builds responsibility, keeps them connected to the sports they love, and puts them in a position to lead and serve in our community,” Nathan Harrison, KHS principal said. “We are very proud of this group and the work they are putting in.”
The RefReps program provides the framework for high schools to implement sports officiating as an elective course or as part of existing programs for credit as part of a Sports Officiating Education Curriculum, according to RefReps. According to RefReps, more than 1,300 students have “learned life skills that will help them succeed and ensure games are played safely and fairly for many decades to come.”
Currently, Iowa ranks tenth in the nation in total RefReps students and eighth in total number of schools teaching this course, with 56 schools already participating, according to RefReps.
“This helps students stay connected to sports while strengthening their communities,” IHSAA, IGHSAU, & RefReps Team released in an email. “Let’s continue working together to make Iowa a leader in this nationwide movement.”
